Meet Our Cats
-
Ashes
Ashes is the sweetest boy; he has had a squinting issue since he was a small fella! He’s been to the vet for it, but there isn’t much volunteers can do because it really requires daily ointment, which ferals don’t tolerate. USI Campus Cats treats the cats with lysine to help build their immune systems. When the heat or allergens are severe, Ashes has flare ups, so you will see him squint more on these days and he might have some drainage. Recently, Ashes hangs back from the group…the other boys are just too in your face for him. If he were a human, he would be the quiet, bookish type. A thoughtful intellectual living on a college campus - that sounds right to us!
-
Eddie
Eddie is a brooding soul who doesn’t care for the ridiculous chit chat of humans. He wants to eat in peace and be on his way. Every once in a while, there is a mouse or mole left as a present; we’re fairly sure Eddie is the hunter of the group. He sometimes wrestles/argues with his brothers, Skinny Minny and Ashes; as you know, boys will be boys!

Indie
Indie, born in 2021, is Mama Tabby’s youngest child. Miss Indie got her name from being Miss Independent! Her other siblings were easily trapped, fostered and adopted out through Vanderburgh Humane Society. Rebellious Indie refused to enter a trap and USI Campus Cats had to wait patiently to capture little Miss Indie with a drop trap so she could be spayed and returned to her home on campus. She used to be famous for climbing high in the trees around the feeding station but has become less wild since she’s through her teenage years. You can sometimes still hear her revving her loud motor if she’s extra pleased to have her kibble poured out. Before Dusty’s disappearance, Indie cozied up to him and was her secret crush. These days she has taken on Dusty’s enthusiasm for mealtime and usually is squabbling with her brother, Marley.

Skinny Minny
Skinny Minny, is a good natured boy and always on the move. He doesn’t tarry long at the food pile because he has things to do and places to go. Regrettably, he likes to scare us by occasionally crossing Clarke Lane to explore the forests. He seems to have some good cat sense because he’s never put himself in harm's way. Keep looking both ways, Skinny Minny!
-
Marley
Marley earned his name by being the most chill kitten, laying around in a sleepy daze while his sibs ran around like maniacs. He still doesn’t see much value in being active; as you can see, he flaunts his chunky build. Before Mama T’s disappearance you could observe Marley disrespectfully smacking his mama. He still likes intimidating his siblings into letting him eat where they are eating and smacking around his younger sister, Indie. Marley, watch that sass!
-
Loki
Loki is a sweet, skittish boy who will hide in the brush and watch you put the food down, but depending on how hungry he is, he might not come out until you’ve walked away. His mom, Cici, was THE smartest, most wiley cat to ever grace the campus. Volunteers tried so hard to trap Loki as a kitten to be fostered and adopted. His mom would not have it and would swat him away from the traps. Her legacy lives on through Loki and his sister, Nox. Loki loves his sister and tolerates the raccoons.
-
Nox
Nox, aka Noxie, is the most beautiful black, long haired gal. Her name means “goddess of the night” and she earns the title! Her mom, Cici, was THE smartest, most wiley cat to ever grace the campus. Volunteers tried so hard to trap Noxie as a kitten to be fostered and adopted. Her mom would not have it and would swat her away from the traps. Cici isn’t with us any longer, but her legacy lives on through Nox and her brother Loki. Noxie is the braver of the duo; girlfriend just wants her food and doesn’t mind sharing it with her brother or a raccoon. Tip: Nox loves wet cat food!
-
Nala
Nala is an elegant, confident lady who doesn’t have patience for nonsense. She loves her shelters deep in the woods and enjoys lounging on branches near the parking lot waiting for her feeder to arrive. You can see her hanging out among the trees in the spring before the brush grows up and hides her. She is appreciative of her feeders and will stretch, squint her eyes or rub on the dumpster enclosure to welcome you. She fearlessly hisses and smacks young raccoons away from her food if needed.
Nala suffered a tail injury in early August 2025 and spent a week inside for recovery. Volunteers were hopeful she might adjust to indoor life, however, she was miserable and was released back to her beloved woods on campus.
-
Burr
Burr was lured to campus by the promise of love. He courted the late Cici in the spring of 2023 but she didn’t reciprocate his love so he left that feeding station for another one. We are pretty sure he was the antagonist who fought and injured Stu in fall of 2023; the happy ending is that Stu, who came to love his feeders, was treated, fostered and adopted as an inside cat. He now lives a puurrrfect life of luxury and Burr has found his place in the world at this station and gained a best buddy in Duke. Burr has calmed down since his neuter; we’re sure glad he shed his combative reputation! Fun Fact: A USI Campus Cats volunteer’s son patiently waited in the car when she was trapping Burr so she let him name the cat. Hamilton was her son’s favorite movie at the time so this black and white feline baddie appropriately became Burr.

Duke
Duke showed up on campus to court our Cici, who could never be trapped. His efforts were successful and he fathered Nox and Loki, but he could be accused of fatherly abandonment because he decided to ditch that station and came to live at another feeding station with Burr. He and Burr became fast friends; they stick together and you don’t often see one without the other. He is still more skittish of humans than most of our ferals, but after his TNR and a year of steady nutrition and shelter, his scraggly fur grew into a full and shiny coat and he is no longer covered in wounds from fighting.
Former Campus Cats
While not common with feral cats, these former campus cats grew friendly over time towards volunteers and have successfully transitioned to enjoying life indoors in loving homes.
